If the Receiver attempts to return the service, they will be deemed ready and the point will be scored as played.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2022 May the Server hit the serve just as the Receiver looks up after<br \/>\ngetting into the ready position? No. The Receiver is not ready until<br \/>\nthe Receiver is in the ready position AND has a second or two to<br \/>\nmake eye contact with the Server.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2022 Once ready, can the Receiver become unready? No. The Receiver<br \/>\ncannot become unready unless outside interference occurs.<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-910 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/usnta.com\/tennis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/ball.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"155\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"560\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"6\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"200\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-908 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/usnta.com\/tennis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/serving.gif\" width=\"200\" height=\"237\" \/><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><strong>Second serve interruptions?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The Server is entitled to two serves if there is interruption DURING DELIVERY of the second serve.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><strong>When to serve?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The receiver must be given adequate time to get into the ready position AND a second or two to make eye contact BEFORE the server may start the service motion. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><strong>A ball rolls on the court BETWEEN the first and second serve?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Only if the time to clear the intruding ball is considered a prolonged interruption does the Server get two serves. The Receiver is the judge of whether it\u2019s a sufficiently prolonged interruption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><strong>A DELAY between the first and second serve? <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(Delay: broken string, contact lens problem, etc.) Delayed caused by Receiver &#8230;two serves. Delay caused by Server &#8230;one serve.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ad; font-size: small;\">MAKING LINE CALLS<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular;\">THE SERVE:<\/span><\/strong> The Receiver\u2019s Partner should call the service line, and the Receiver should call the sideline and the center service line. Nonetheless, either partner may call a ball that either sees clearly.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><strong>IN THE MATCH:<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Opponent gets benefit of doubt. Players are guided by the unwritten law that any doubt must be resolved in favor of the opponent. A player in attempting to be scrupulously honest on line calls frequently will find themselves keeping a ball in play that might have been out or that the player discovers too late was out. Even so, the game is much better played this way.<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-911 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/usnta.com\/tennis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/can_ball.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"181\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ad; font-size: small;\">MAKING CALLS DURING SERVICE&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><strong>Service calls by serving team.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Neither the Server nor Server\u2019s partner shall make a fault call on the first service even if they think it is out because the Receiver may be giving the Server the benefit of the doubt. But the Server and the Server\u2019s partner SHALL CALL OUT any second serve that either clearly sees out.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><strong>Obvious faults.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> A player SHALL NOT PUT INTO PLAY or HIT over the net any obvious fault.
